Volunteering
Volunteers are the key to DISC'S success. All volunteers that work in the information and advice service are disabled people themselves. This gives them an empathy with the people we are here to help, and means that in many cases they can offer advice or refer people to an agency that they themselves have experience of.
We also offer a service to the volunteers, in that many of them come to us very low in confidence and quite isolated, through having spent much of their time at home. Whilst helping others at Disc, they are also able to help themselves, finding useful information for their own needs, learning new skills, or just enjoying the social side to be part of a successful team.
2005 has been designated 'Year of the Volunteer' and, in recognition of the work the volunteers do, a number of events, parties and study visits have been organised free of charge to thank the volunteers for the work they do.
Why do you like Disc ?
'' I enjoy being a volunteer here simply because I get to meet other disabled people like myself and also because I get to be of help to other disabled people.''
